Age Matters, But It Is Not the Whole Story

A heat pump that has been running a decade in coastal air has had a harder life than one inland, because salt gets into the outdoor coil and the cabinet fasteners. Still, age alone does not condemn a system. A well maintained unit with a bad capacitor or a failed contactor is worth fixing at almost any age, because those are ordinary wear parts. What changes the math is age plus a sealed system fault, or age plus a coil that is corroded through in more than one place. When we see one repair leading straight into the next, we say so instead of selling you a part at a time.

The Type of Fault Tells You Most of What You Need to Know

Faults fall into rough groups. Electrical components such as capacitors, contactors, relays and control boards are replaceable and the system goes back to normal service. Airflow problems, blower motors, defrost boards and reversing valve solenoids sit in the middle: real parts, real labor, usually still sensible. Then there are sealed system failures. A compressor that has failed internally, or a refrigerant leak inside a coil that cannot be reached, changes the conversation. We diagnose which group you are in first, because a homeowner told "it needs refrigerant" without a located leak has not actually been told anything useful.

Parts Availability and Refrigerant Type

Some heat pumps are easy to source parts for and some are not. Older systems, discontinued model lines and certain original equipment control boards can mean waiting, and waiting through a humid week in August is its own cost. Refrigerant type matters too. Systems running older refrigerants are still serviceable, but the refrigerant itself is harder to get and the supply is shrinking, so a large leak on one of those units is a different decision than the same leak on a current system. Matching the Indoor and Outdoor Halves

A heat pump is two pieces working as one. If the outdoor unit has failed and the indoor coil and air handler are in good shape and the same generation, replacing one half can work. If they are far apart in age, or the indoor coil is already showing corrosion or a slow leak, a mismatched pair tends to underperform and fail early. In crawlspace installations across the region we also look at the ductwork and the condition of the pan and drain, because a high water table and standing humidity are hard on anything sitting low. Matching is a repair question, not a sales question.

How We Think About It on a Visit, and When Replacement Honestly Wins

We start with the symptom you called about, confirm it, then check the parts around it so we are not fixing one thing next to three failing things. You get the fault, the part, the lead time and what we saw elsewhere in the system. Replacement wins when the compressor has failed on an older unit, when a coil leak is in a place we cannot reliably repair, when the same fault has come back more than once, or when the refrigerant is hard to source and the leak is large. It also wins when the indoor half is worn out at the same time. If none of that is true, we repair it.

Usually a repair. Icing points to a defrost control, sensor, reversing valve or airflow problem, and all of those are serviceable parts. Change your filter and clear debris around the outdoor unit, then call us for diagnosis.

The technician said it just needs refrigerant. Should I do that?

Not without a located leak. Refrigerant does not get used up, so low charge means it escaped somewhere. Ask where the leak is. A repeat top-off every season is money spent on a problem nobody has found.

Can I replace only the outdoor unit?

Sometimes. It works when the indoor coil and air handler are the same generation and in sound condition. If they are much older or already leaking, a mismatched pair tends to run poorly and fail sooner than expected.
