The independent heating and cooling company across Hampton Roads and coastal Virginia

Capacitor & Fan Motor Replacement

We replace failed run capacitors and condenser and blower fan motors on residential air conditioning systems across Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Washington DC. You usually need this job when the outdoor unit hums but the fan will not spin, the air handler runs with no airflow, or the AC trips the breaker on startup. Turn the system off at the thermostat so it does not keep trying to start, then call us and describe what you heard. We will get a technician out for the air conditioner repair.

What the job involves

A capacitor stores the jolt of energy a motor needs to start and keep turning. When it weakens, the motor draws too much current and either stalls or overheats. We shut off power at the disconnect, safely discharge the old capacitor, confirm the reading against the rating on the can, and install a replacement matched to the motor. If the motor itself has failed bearings or a shorted winding, we pull it, transfer the blade or wheel, and set the correct rotation and mounting.

What we check and install

We test capacitance and check amp draw on the compressor and fan under load, because a motor that is dragging will kill a new capacitor in weeks. We look at the contactor for pitted points, the wiring for heat damage, and the coil for the salt corrosion and debris that make a condenser fan work harder near the coast. On the indoor side we check blower wheel buildup and a clogged filter. Replacement motors are matched on horsepower, voltage, rotation and frame.

How we decide it is the right call

A weak capacitor with a healthy motor is a straightforward part swap and the system runs normally afterward. If the motor shows high amp draw, rough bearings, or a winding that reads short to ground, replacing only the capacitor buys you days. We tell you which one we are seeing and why. On an older system with a failing compressor or a heavily corroded coil, we will say plainly that a motor replacement may not be money well spent, then walk through your options.

Capacitor & Fan Motor Replacement — quick answers

Why did my outdoor fan stop but the unit still hums?

That hum is usually the compressor trying to run while the fan motor sits still, and a failed capacitor is the common cause. Shut the system off so it does not overheat, then call us for air conditioning repair.

How long does a capacitor or fan motor replacement take?

A capacitor is often handled in a single visit once we confirm the reading and check amp draw. A fan motor takes longer because we match the specifications and may need to order the correct unit.

Will a new capacitor fix a motor that already failed?

No. If the winding is shorted or the bearings are gone, a new capacitor will fail again quickly. We test both so you are not paying twice for the same symptom.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. We ask what changed, when it started, and what the thermostat reads against the actual room temperature. That short conversation tells us what parts to load on the truck.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behaviour and the outdoor unit. You get a plain explanation of what failed and why, before any work starts.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and verify

We make the repair, then run the system through a full cycle and measure temperatures at the supply and return. If something upstream caused the failure, we tell you so it does not repeat.

Why homeowners call us

  • We know salt airCoastal homes lose condenser coils to salt corrosion years before inland systems do. We look for fin damage and pitted line sets on every visit, because a clean-looking unit can still be shedding capacity from the outside in.
  • Humidity is part of the jobHurricane-season air loads a system in ways a temperature reading will not show. If your house feels clammy at 74 degrees, we look at run times, airflow and drainage rather than just adding refrigerant and leaving.
  • Crawlspace realitiesHigh water tables mean wet ground under ductwork, rusted plenums and condensate lines with nowhere good to drain. We check what is happening under the floor, since that is often where comfort problems actually begin.
  • Straight answersWe tell you what failed, what it will take to fix, and whether a repair makes sense on an older system. No pressure to replace something that has honest years left in it, and no vague diagnosis.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
  • Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
