What Ice on the Coil Actually Means

The indoor evaporator coil is supposed to run cold but stay above freezing. When it drops below freezing, the moisture it pulls out of your house turns to frost instead of draining away. That frost builds into ice, the ice blocks air from moving through the coil, and the whole thing snowballs until you get no cooling at all and water on the floor when it melts. So ice is a symptom, never the cause. Two things push a coil below freezing: not enough warm air moving across it, or not enough refrigerant in it. Almost every frozen coil we see traces back to one of those two families. Running the system frozen strains the compressor, which is the expensive part.

Cause One: Restricted Airflow, The Cheapest Fix

A clogged filter is the single most common reason we find ice, and it is the cheapest thing on this list. A filter loaded with dust starves the coil of the warm air it needs. Closed or blocked supply vents do the same thing, and so does a return grille shoved behind furniture. Next up the cost ladder is a dirty coil itself, where dust cakes the fins and air cannot pass. In our region, crawlspace air handlers over a high water table pull damp, gritty air, and coils load up faster than homeowners expect. A failing blower motor or a slipped blower wheel also cuts airflow, and that is a repair, not a cleaning.

Cause Two: Low Refrigerant, And Cause Three: Controls

If airflow is fine, the coil is usually short on refrigerant. Refrigerant does not get used up, so low charge means a leak somewhere in the coil, the line set, or the outdoor unit. Salt air along the coast eats at copper and aluminum, and we find pinhole leaks on systems that look fine from ten feet away. Leak repair and charging are licensed refrigerant work and not something to attempt at home. The third family is controls and metering: a stuck expansion valve, a bad thermostat calling for cooling nonstop, or an outdoor unit running while the blower is not. Those need meters and gauges to sort out.

What You Can Safely Check Yourself

Start by switching the cooling mode off at the thermostat and setting the fan to ON. That circulates room air over the coil and thaws it faster, usually a few hours. Put a towel under the air handler because melting ice makes water. While it thaws, do these: change the air filter if it is grey or matted, check thermostat batteries and confirm it is set to cool with a sane temperature, look at the breaker panel for anything tripped, walk the house and open any closed supply vents, and clear leaves, grass clippings and mulch back from the outdoor unit. That is the safe list. Anything involving refrigerant lines, gas or wiring stops there.

What a Technician Does Differently

We start where you cannot: measuring. We check temperature split across the coil, static pressure in the ductwork, and blower amp draw to see whether airflow is genuinely short or just looks that way. Then we put gauges on the system and read pressures and superheat, which tells us if the charge is low and roughly where the restriction sits. If it reads low, we leak search rather than just adding refrigerant, because a topped-off system with a hole in it freezes again by next month. We also pull the blower and inspect the coil face, check the drain for standing water, and look at duct sizing if the same house keeps freezing up every summer.

Can I just chip the ice off the coil?

No. Coil fins and the tubing behind them bend and puncture easily, and a punctured coil turns a service call into a coil replacement. Shut cooling off, run the fan, and let it melt on its own.

How long does a frozen coil take to thaw?

With the fan running and cooling off, usually two to six hours depending on how much ice built up. A solid block can take overnight. Keep a towel or pan under the air handler for the meltwater.

Why does it freeze again after I change the filter?

Because the filter was not the cause. Repeat freezing usually points to low refrigerant from a leak, a weak blower, a dirty coil, or undersized return ductwork. That needs gauges and airflow readings to pin down.
